Who’s it for?
I offer broadcast voice coaching for anyone interested in learning to use their voice more effectively to achieve a smoother, more confident but relaxed sound that carries authority – principally (though not exclusively) for those involved in broadcasting and online journalism.
These techniques can also be applied to public speaking, presentations etc. Bespoke classes can be provided to meet specific needs.
What clients can hope to achieve:
By making regular recordings of a pupil’s voice, together we identify areas for improvement. Progress is quickly discernible from the recordings we make, which further helps to increase confidence and in turns improves the voice. Clients will become more relaxed, confident and natural in their delivery.
How do I coach?
My teaching experience has developed over many years, initially as a ski instructor, using a broad range of creative communication techniques to help skiers overcome their fears and to apply in practical, physical terms the lessons they learnt. I taught skiers to ski out of their minds!
Perhaps surprisingly to some, I use many of the same techniques to coach voices; helping clients to control and use their nerves and adrenalin, to deal with self-consciousness and to develop breathing techniques to produce a much smoother and more confident delivery. Clients learn why a voice works as it does, and how their own behaviour affects it (and you just might find you ski better too!).
Individuals learn in different ways, and so I use innovative, creative and entertaining methods, tailored to each individual for maximum impact.
My experience in broadcasting enables me to understand the specific challenges the medium presents. Broadcasters and print journalists contributing to online audio content will find my voice coaching particularly useful.

Testimonials:
“The breathing exercises were particularly new to me, and I now find myself trying to breathe not just from my chest, but from much deeper. I found myself out of breath during the first reading, but with Tracy’s advice, I was taking bigger breaths, felt more relaxed and therefore sounded much more natural in later recordings … One’s voice is quite a personal thing, and I wasn’t sure how I’d feel being told to change things about it. However Tracy was very encouraging and I felt at ease straight away. She suggested small tweaks here and there and I was very pleasantly surprised by the results. Very worthwhile.” – Amy Sutherland
“Even though I read two voice books and had a voice coaching session with another tutor already, I think the one hour session with you helped me the most! …You were an excellent teacher, put me at ease and described techniques well.” – Lindsay Brown
‘I have worked with Tracy Norris and observed her voice coaching sessions first hand. She is, without exception, one of the best vocal coaches I have seen. Her approach to teaching is warm and friendly and she really connects with people and gets the best out of them. Her exercises are imaginative and fun and she clearly puts a lot of thought, preparation and planning into what she does. Each session is tailored for the students needs and this bespoke way of teaching has great benefits. In just one session I have seen students move from simply reading a script to broadcasting it in a conversational style. She brings the same creativity she has as a journalist to her teaching style.’ – Kenny Toal, Presenter/Correspondent ITV News
